On May 21, 1862, Heist, of Winchester, Virginia, writes to John Dale of Bridgeville, Delaware, after the death of Dale's son James, a soldier in the Fifth Virginia Regiment of the Confederate Army. James Dale died at the Battle of Kernstown on March 23, 1862. The Dale family clearly supported the South in the Civil War. Source: Dale Family Letters, Delaware Historical Society Collections.
