  New Castle Historical Society's annual mourning exhibit returns this year at both the Amstel House and the Old Library Museum. The Old Library Museum exhibit will have a special focus on mourning practices during the Civil War. Included with regular admission to the Amstel House. Lecture — "From the Crater to a Tree Near Smyrna: The Tragic Odyssey of Obie Evans and other African-Americans in Civil-War Delaware"

Obie Evans escaped slavery, survived the Battle of the Crater, and participated in Baltimore's post-war street riots—only to be murdered by other war veterans near Smyrna in 1866. His story reveals the triumphs and tragedies of African-Americans in Civil War Delaware.

Civil War Conversation — "The Picklocks of Biographers"

Through anecdote and biography, in literary accounts and artistic images, in what they wrote and in what has been written about them, we will meet the men and women of the Civil War. Some of the names will be of those individuals so well remembered in our nation's history that facts about them and legends associated with them have become as one. The stories of others, so long ago distanced from our collective memory as to be all but forgotten, will be retold, and in the retelling we will deepen our understanding of the Civil War. Free.

Hagley Creek Kids invite families to learn about the different uses for gunpowder in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Activities will also give visitors an opportunity to learn about Hagley's communities and their roles in the Civil War. Throughout the state's history the women of Delaware have kept the home fires burning as the men marched off to battle. During the Civil War, things were no different, but then again, this was a new generation of minds. Covering the political and social sway of the times, Bobbi Steele-Wilkins, a member of the Central Delaware Civil War Roundtable and the Fort Delaware Society, will present a view of women’s lives in Delaware from 1861-1865.Working in homes, factory and field to provide for themselves and the armies, they added physical, fiscal, and moral support to their families and friends in a small state full of divided loyalties.

Fort Delaware's Third Annual KidsFest, co-sponsored by the Fort Delaware Society, promises to be an outstanding day with vintage baseball, historical games. You can even sign up for the Army or help around the kitchen. A $5 donation to the Fort Delaware Society gains admittance to the carnival tent with special kid-friendly games and take-home craft projects. Proceeds help support preservation and interpretation of Fort Delaware.

"Choosing Sides" Program Kicks Off Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration
May 6, 7 p.m.
The Delaware Heritage Commission, in conjunction with the History Department of Delaware State University, kicks off its observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War with an event entitled, "Choosing Sides" at Delaware State University's Education & Humanities Theatre. Well-known historian Adam Goodheart will discuss his new book, 1861: The Civil War Experience, as well as the days between the election of Abraham Lincoln and the outbreak of War, while Delaware and its citizens struggled to cope with unstoppable forces. Joining Mr. Goodheart will be a number of "living historians" portraying Delawareans of the time.

Recognizing Delawareans Who Supported the Confederacy

The Delaware Grays chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is unveiling the names of 31 additional Delawareans who served or supported the Confederacy during the Civil War. The event will feature re-enactors and living historians in period dress, and refreshments will be served.
